Monday Stuff on the Way to Other Stuff: HOME

What a lovely word.

Unfortunately, we weren't planning on being here quite so quickly. After my stint at the John C. Campbell School of Folk Art ended, we had planned to go on to a few days at the Outer Banks.

Then we got a call -- the Brick's Aunt Fran had died in Kansas City.

Frances Mead was Mom's older sister...and until the Brick's Mom died some thirteen years ago, they were very close. Fran's husband Bernie died a long while back...but her children and grandchildren were very dear to her. She was 97.

Her funeral was Saturday afternoon. We were finished at John Campbell at 6 p.m. Friday night. We could do it...if we drove all night.

So we did. In spite of a dead battery and being stranded for a while at a Paducah, KY rest stop. (Thank you, kind trucker who gave us a 'jump.') Then having to spend an hour at an O'Fallon, IL Wal-mart to get a new one. (Thank you, kind car center guy who got us right in and out.)

...We made it, with an hour to spare.

Got home last night, still a little punch-drunk. We drove a little more than 2900 miles in eight days. But we're home intact, the Outback's running nicely...and dogs Charley and Abs are thrilled.
This week's Monday Stuff is a little limited, as a consequence. I promise you better entries next time.

The king of Thailand died. We had a good friend, Tiger, in Ann Arbor while at the University of Michigan, who hailed from this beautiful country. I wonder how badly he was affected -- or will be.

Bob Dylan wins the Nobel Prize. For what, you ask? Literature. Yeah, right.
Now the committee can't seem to locate him...

A major Viking winter site discovered in Ireland -- one of only two in the country. (The other is/was Dublin.) Ships pulled up for repair at this spot, which was later abandoned because it was too shallow. The site, on farmland, is said to be unspoiled. Wow.

23 lies hidden on product labels. Ouch.  (From Cracked)

Truman Capote's ashes are auctioned off.  Sick -- and I don't mean it in a good way, either.

Famous last words from U.S. presidents.  (From Zergnet) Lots of links to other 'famous last words' posts, too.

Is it possible to survive on a $30/week for groceries?  (A classic from Moneysaving Mom)

Free fast food for a year. How do you do it? Andy's accomplished it three times now.  (From Tight Fisted Miser)

A baker's dozen of tips for Christmas savings -- an old (and still helpful, I think) post from yours truly. As well as...

The best sugar cookie recipe in the world.

I am NOT going to tack on a bunch of election stuff. In spite of all the propaganda and folderol, I still think neither Republican nor Democratic candidate deserves to be president.

The horrible truth: I'm going to have to choose one.

Yup, feel the same way...

Spring Is Here... And Updates

We have now lived in Fort Garland for five months. It's been interesting to see how spring arrives here in the 'High Desert:&...
